The Las Vegas You May Not Have Seen (or Heard About)
Ethel M Chocolates go for the chocolate tour, but you will be amazed by the demonstration water reclamation project. Ethel M also has a demonstration botanical garden with low-water plants that is a photographer’s delight.
Sun Buggy Fun Rentals provides free shuttles from hotels in Las Vegas to take an adventure tour in their custom built dune buggies. The Nellis Dunes Mini-Baja is a high speed off road chase that is as close to real Baja desert racing as most of us will ever get. There are also more laid back excursions like the Valley of Fire adventure which is a scenic nature tour like none other.
The Las Vegas Art Museum shares a building with a library and the ballet. With a focus on contemporary art and design, past exhibitions have included both displays by local Las Vegas artists and showcases of work by artists such as Dale Chihuly, Sam Francis, and August Rodin.
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a mountainous desert area 20 minutes from the Strip. It is beautiful and filled with hiking (and photo) opportunities. Consider hiking with a local expert, who can arrange private hikes and rock-scrambling adventures in the park.
The Hoover Dam is a monument to human labor, engineering, and environment-shaping. Take the tour through the Dam. You’ll be surprised how fascinating it is.
Downtown Las Vegas is worth a trip just to see the old hotels and original gambling halls. The Fremont Street Experience, and the ten-minute show that's put on throughout the night every hour on the hour on an overhead blanket of lights, is a unique experience. Plus, there aren’t many places left in Las Vegas where you can eat (a lot) for well under ten bucks.
The Clark County Wetlands Nature Preserve is about 8 miles east of the Strip. The Preserve includes over two miles of paved trails (and several miles of unpaved trails), a bird-viewing blind, and ponds. See the website http://www.accessclarkcounty.com/depts/parks/locations/pages/wetlands.aspx for maps, a birding checklist, a bird gallery to assist in identifying unfamiliar species, and other helpful information.
Valley of Fire State Park is a fantastic drive with hikes through the red sandstone formations, canyons, and petroglyphs. It is about 50 minutes from Las Vegas.
The House of Blues Gospel Brunch is held every Sunday and combines live music and good old-fashioned gluttony.
And there’s more: Ron Lee’s World of Clowns, The Liberace Museum, Las Vegas Natural History Museum, the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum, the Walker African-American Museum, the Roger Petty Driving Experience, Cloud Nine Balloons, and Vegas Indoor Skydiving!
