Leadership Lessons from the Movies

Movies are more than entertainment; a good movie communicates an incredibly effective story. And, people have been learning from stories since prehistoric times. Stories convey values, life lessons, understanding and new experiences. Research indicates that stories are remembered far better than facts and figures–and they appeal to all learners. In short, they are an influential communication vehicle that can be used to illustrate and develop leadership skills. Movies examine both formal leadership and informal leadership; they can show us leaders who are determined, inspiring, and trust-worthy as well as how to problem-solve, lead teams and overcome obstacles. We will watch movie clips taken from well-known movies and then break down the vital leadership lessons shown or disregarded and the importance of each. An example of lessons to be learned:

  • Embracing situational leadership
  • Leadership is a lifestyle, not a 9-5 job
  • Determining the “why” behind our “what”
